Trinidad and Cienfuegos Tour From Varadero
On our vacation to 🏖 Varadero Cuba a few seasons ago, one of the things I most wanted to do, was to take a private 🚗 Classic Car Tour to the historic city of Trinidad. My wife and I had the pleasure of taking this full day tour with – 🚘 Havana 60 Classic Car Tours.
This tour also included a stop and walk about in the old city of – Cienfuegos.
A Full Day Driving Tour From Varadero Cuba
As our time was limited, we opted for the full day tour, which we knew would entail a great deal of driving in one day. Many people prefer to break this up and to spend the night in Trinidad, if time permits.
I would definitely recommend spending the night if you can, as it is at least 4 ½ hours drive one way to Trinidad, from the Varadero beach resort area.
About Havana 60 Classic Car Tours
This very reputable company was formed by a group of professional tour guides, drivers and photographers in Cuba. They can arrange for a variety of tours in their Classic or Modern Cars all over Cuba.
Such popular destinations include;
All of their private tours are accompanied by one of their professional drivers and a personal English speaking tour guide.
“We believe that the perfect mixture is to customize every single Tour to our client’s need at the same time that we let you know about Cuban history and traditions.”
Our Full Day Tour To Trinidad and Cienfuegos
I have always said that taking a private tour, is so much better than your typical crammed 🚌 big bus tour and that so many people still choose to take.
Surprisingly the cost is not much more, especially if there are more than 2 of you in your group.
It’s definitely worth paying a little bit extra, for your own 🚗 personalized tour.
You get a private car, tour guide and you can choose to go where you want and at your own pace, without following a large group everywhere throughout the entire day!
This is a very long day, but as I have an interest in history, we simply could not miss the opportunity to see these two Historic UNESCO World Heritage destinations while in Cuba.
As mentioned, many visitors will break up the day and spend the night in Trinidad, which is a great option if you have the time.
Our pickup was as scheduled at our 🏨 hotel at 06:30 and met by our driver and guide (Yunior) in their – 🚘 Classic 1957 Chevrolet. This was an early morning pickup, as we had a long 4 ½ hour drive ahead of us, to the other side of the island.
We came prepared with a few snacks and water for our long journey ahead!
But no worries, they make a stop along the way to grab a ☕ coffee, use the washroom and grab a snack if you wish!
Our drive takes us right across the 🏝 island to the Caribbean side, where you’ll get the opportunity to view small towns along the way, the beautiful countryside and the islands agricultural areas.
It is definitely worth the drive to get away from the tourist zone, and see the locals go about their daily lives along the way.
Cienfuegos:
Our first full stop was to the historic city of – Cienfuegos. This port city was founded in 1819 by the French and was was declared – World Heritage by UNESCO in 2005.
It has the deepest bay in Latin America with a depth of over 900 feet, making it easy for the largest of Cruise Ships and other vessels arriving from around the world to enter.
Our first stop is a stretch break and visit to an area in the city along its shores called – Punta Gorda.
This was the aristocratic quarter of the city in the early 1900´s and the stunning historic Valle´s Palace and the adjoining luxury Hotel Jagua are located here.
One of the oldest homes in the city is located in this area as well.
Punta Gorda is incredibly peaceful, with some absolutely beautiful historic homes located along its shores.
Some of the beautifully restored palaces are still located in Punta Gorda, giving you a glimpse of what life was like in this area many years ago.
After our short walkabout, it was time to head back in the car and make our way to the main town center and the bustling central park plaza area of the city.
A lovely park plaza surrounded by some very beautiful and historic buildings and monuments.
Some of the sites to see here include;
✔ Tomas Terry Theater;
✔ Purísima Concepción Cathedral;
✔ Ferrer´s Palace;
✔ Former City Hall;
✔ Marti Park and the triumphal arch and more.
It was a nice short break from the early morning drive with the chance to stretch our legs, take a short walk and snap some pictures in Punta Gorda, the surrounding bay and the town plaza areas of this city.
On to Trinidad just a short distance away!
Trinidad:
Trinidad dates back to 1514 and is among the first few villages to be established in Cuba.
It’s very small, but the stone streets, its very old buildings and horse buggies roaming about, will set you back in time!
The town was declared a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1988 and many of the historic buildings are being restored, with vibrant colors. This is definitely a major tourist attraction in Cuba and certainly worth visiting.
It would have been nice to have been able to spend the evening here and see how different the town looks at dark.
Our guide and driver led us to the main points of interest in the town of which some included;
✔ Santísima Trinidad Cathedral, former Basilica Saint Francis of Assisi;
✔ Cantero´s;
✔ Brunet´s and Iznaga´s Palaces;
✔ Optional visit to the Romantic Museum.
We brought along some bags of candy from home to hand out to some of the young school children. As luck had it, there was a quaint 🏫 pre-school in town we walked by, that was ideal!
The children were having their nap time which was picture perfect and the teachers were thrilled to receive the small token of ours for the children.
It was time for a sit down and enjoy a leisurely lunch at a family run business in town which was delicious, and a very welcoming break from the hot afternoon Cuban sun.
The old 🌲 tree towering over the restaurant outside patio was absolutely huge and incredible to see!
After lunch, it was time to head back to our 🚘 Classic Car and begin the long drive back to Varadero beach.
All in all, a very nice day despite the many hours of driving. It was well worth seeing these two historic cities, the small towns we passed through and the beautiful countryside of Cuba.
