Discover The Most Beautiful Cycling Routes In The UK

Nothing compares to the thrill of exploring some of the UK’s most breathtaking trails on a bicycle. The most accessible way to discover the natural wonders of the country, cycling is healthy for the environment and even better for your health. You’ll have to work up a sweat now and then, but that’s part of the fun.

Cycling in the UK is one of the most fun activities you can enjoy. What’s keeping you from putting your name in the history books of exploration with two wheels in the United Kingdom? These breathtaking rides take in lovely villages, isolated scenery, natural wonders, gorgeous beaches, iconic landmarks, and much more, ranging from calm canal walks to cross-country routes. What’s more, participating in all of this and emerging as a daring explorer with steel thighs is a memorable experience.

To get you started, here are some of the most beautiful cycle routes in the UK:

Box Hill Olympic Circuit

Follow the pro peloton’s pedals through some of the most accessible and picturesque countryside in South East England. The Surrey Hills, which was a highlight of the 2012 Olympics, has risen to become one of the UK’s must-ride destinations. This brief circle of 16.8 kilometres of meandering rural roads is an excellent introduction to both the area and the now-iconic, Box Hill. The twisty 2.5km hill is a satisfying test of stamina ideal for both novices and seasoned riders alike, with views overlooking the River Mole.

The Camel Trail, Cornwall

Whether it’s a day of carefree riding, a family ride, or an easy Sunday stroll, the Camel Trail provides something for everyone. The largely traffic-free path spans 19km of gorgeous Cornish scenery and runs the length of a former railway line. Start your bike in Padstow with a visit to one of Rick Stein’s many restaurants before heading to Wadebridge on the well-surfaced estuary route. After a long walk, you can stop here or go on to Bodmin, travelling through exquisite woods and some of the most beautiful scenery in the south-west.

The Settle Circular, Yorkshire

Yorkshire is already well and firmly known as one of the top riding destinations in the world. After the Tour de France flew over the region for three days in 2014, God’s Own Country has quickly risen to the top of many a cycling enthusiast’s bucket list. With so many options across Yorkshire, this leg-burning 64 kilometre circle from Settle is both gorgeous and hard. Prepare for short, sharp climbs, fast-rolling descents, and breathtaking views of Pen-y-Ghent and Pendle Hill as you ride through the charming communities of Arncliffe, Kilnsey, and Grassington.

Elan Valley, Wales

This undiscovered gem will take you off the beaten path. The Elan Valley is an all-ability bike centre and one of Wales’ top mountain biking places, along the ancient Birmingham Corporation Railway line. The linear track begins in Cwmdauddwr and winds across the valley, passing via Rhayader Tunnel, a Wildlife Trust Reserve and home to a variety of bat species. The track then climbs beyond Garreg Ddu Reservoir – a beautiful spot for a photo of the surrounding valleys – before terminating at Craig Goch Dam, passing through woods and grassland.

Richmond Park, London

Richmond Park is undoubtedly one of London’s most popular cycling places, serving as a cycling paradise in the heart of England’s city. The key to Richmond Park is laps, which are ideal for beginners and club riders. Prepare to face the tough climbs of either Broomfield Hill or the longer and steadier Dark Hill depending on whether you choose the clockwise or anti-clockwise course. Whether you’re out for a leisurely one-lap ride or a multi-lap training session, take a moment to admire the distant vistas of St.Paul’s Cathedral – and you might even catch a sight of a deer if you’re lucky enough.

Cycling has become incredibly popular in Britain over the last few years. The activities are incredibly diverse, ranging from Cornwall’s rugged coast and the Peak District’s spectacular switchbacks to Norfolk’s flat fens to the undulating South Downs. If you enjoy seeing stunning views and sights, cycling will always interest you.
